Maximum Security had his final serious training session prior to next Saturday’s Grade 1, $750,000 Cigar Mile with a one-mile gallop in 1:57.01 Sunday morning over the Belmont Park training track. Maximum Security finished his last three furlongs in 42.21 seconds and will be credited with that time for a three-furlong workout.
It is quite similar to how Maximum Security has trained throughout the year, one in which he has won two Grade 1 stakes – the Florida Derby and Haskell _ and finished first in the Kentucky Derby only to be disqualified and placed 17th for interference.
“He’s fit, he looks good, he’s training good,” said Henry Argueta, the Belmont-based assistant to trainer Jason Servis. “We’re expecting a good race.”
Maximum Security is coming off a victory in the Grade 3 Bold Ruler Stakes at Belmont on Oct. 26, in which he beat older horses for the first time.
Weights for the Cigar Mile are expected to be released later today by the New York Racing Association racing office. Among those expected to run include Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Spun to Run, Grade 2 Kelso winner Pat On the Back, Grade 1 winner Whitmore, True Timber, Looking at Bikinis, Network Effect, Tale of Silence, Bal Harbor, and Forewarned.
