The racing program Sunday at Santa Anita has less meat than Saturday. And when every horse you like is a short price in a small field, maybe it is a hint that Sunday is a good day to watch football. Quick takes for the Santa Anita card …
Race 1 – Not sold on Sold It (5) as the favorite in this N2X turf mile. Her fourth last out against 3-year-olds was partly the product of a soft pace. Maybe she will get the same trip again, but this handicapper considers her vulnerable. Sedamar (1) top choice, although 5-2 is no bargain in this six-runner field.
Race 2 – Another six-runner field, this maiden-claiming route has very little speed. Sabinos Pride (1) should be forwardly placed, while second-time starter Subtle Ride (2) is likely to improve around two turns. She is by Clubhouse Ride, reason enough for a second look.
Race 3 – If the front-runner Square Peggy (2) wires the field, she will be the meet’s first gate-to-wire winner of a turf sprint. All 13 turf sprints were won from behind. That trend will change eventually. Meanwhile, closers Smiling Annie (3) and Violette Szabo (4) are this handicapper’s one-two.
Race 4 – Five runners, Lagoon Macaroon (4) should be tough at 6-5.
Race 5 – Blackout (6), off the pace as the favorite in a $32k claiming turf sprint. Upset chance to Northern California-based closer Tigerbeach (3) at a "whopping" 4-1.
Race 6 – Five runners, looks like a two-horse race between top choice Cyrielle (5) and program favorite Catoca (1).
Race 7 – Dipping In (2) had a tough trip last time in a similar maiden-claiming turf mile. With clear sailing, she can win. Another favorite. Have to admit, might have underestimated last-out runner-up Lucia’s Design (1).
Race 8 – Lady Ninja (5) should win this filly-mare sprint stakes. All she must do is wear down likely pacesetter Mother Mother (4). Program odds for top two choices: 7-5, 8-5.
Race 9 – Finally, something to bet. Rocks and Salt (3) ran a lot better than the line looks last out, he is 7-2 in this Cal-bred maiden turf mile. Rocks and Salt is worth backing, while Margot’s Boy (4) ran well in the same race as the top choice.
Most vulnerable favorite – Sold It, race 1. Most probable winner – Lady Ninja, race 8. Best value – Rocks and Salt, race 9.
