Smiling Annie finished fifth in Sunday's third race, an allowance race with a $20,000 claiming option at 5 1-2 furlongs on turf for state-bred fillies and mares, but should have been closer, or even the winner, with any luck in the stretch.
Leading rider Joel Rosario took the inside path on 5-2 Smiling Tiger, but did not have sufficient space to get past fading pacesetter Square Peggy, a 9-2 chance. Smiling Annie finished 2 1-2 lengths behind winner Grinningeartoear ($8.60).
The stewards conducted an inquiry, but did change the order of finish.
