Three-year-old colt Earner was bet down to even money for his career debut in race 8 at Fair Grounds, but he was absolutely no match for his 13-1 stable-mate Echo Town, who ran right over Earner in mid-stretch and went on to win by about three lengths. Earner ran fine and was far clear of the third-place horse, but Echo Town really smoked his six furlongs, going 1:09.39, which is very fast for a 3-year-old first-timer, even on this glib surface. Steve Asmussen trains both horses and Joe Talamo rode the winner. Echo Town ($28) is a son of Speightstown and Letgomyecho, who won the Grade 2 Forward Gal over seven furlongs. Letgomyecho has been a solid broodmare and also produced J Boys Echo, who won the G3 Gotham, and Unbridled Outlaw, who looked for a minute like he might be a good 3-year-old of 2016. Echo Town might eke out a two-turn middle-distance trip but one might guess he'd be happiest at a one-turn mile or shorter.
