Wagering opportunities abound Saturday, from Gulfstream to Oaklawn to Santa Anita. Cross-country spot-play preview, in chronological order …
GP race 1 (11:30 ET), N1X – Impressive last-out maiden turf winner Sister Hanan (4) is listed at an appealing 8-1, though she is likely to drop a couple points. A replay (GP, Dec. 22, race 7) of her outstanding maiden illustrates why. Sharp.
GP race 3 (12:28 ET), $150k Turf Sprint – Another replay (SA, Jan. 1, race 8) worth review is the last-out Grade 2 by California shipper Texas Wedge (2), who won despite a somewhat compromising trip. A sharp gelding in career-best form, he is worth playing at 4-1 over program favorite Shekky Shebaz (1).
GP race 4 (12:57 ET), MSW – The last time Jorge Navarro put Irad Ortiz on a first-time starter for Sonata Stable, Premier Star won decisively. They team again with first-time starter Precise Dancer (11), listed at 10-1 with a B+ workout rating in the Daily Racing Form “Gulfstream Clocker Report.”
GP race 9 (3:56 ET), G2 Inside Information – Is it too much to ask for deep closer Pink Sands (11) to get the same pace meltdown as her last-start victory? Looks like enough speed to set it up again for the 8-1 late-runner.
GP race 11 (4:49 ET), G1 Pegasus World Cup Turf – Channel Cat (5) might not be good enough, but he did not have the greatest of trips last out when third in a Grade 2. He is 10-1 against this tougher field and can outrun his price with a better trip.
OP race 7 (4:09 CT), $100k Pippin Stakes – John Sadler starts 10 runners at four tracks Saturday including front-runner Lady Suebee (2). She is fast enough to win this stakes race at 6-1. Would not take a point less on a front-runner who faces a challenging pace scenario. But where’s the late speed in this field? Apparently, there is none.
SA race 5 (2:20 PT) N1X – Edited from DRF analysis: “This turf mile is a good spot to take a shot with Sash (2), last in his U.S. debut in a Grade 2. Sash was highly regarded when purchased for approximately $430,000 at a European auction in autumn. He had only three works into his local debut, and actually ran okay. Three-wide, four-wide, still in the hunt at the five-sixteenths and floated wider into the lane, he tired. He will like faster ground than he got last out. Tab for an upset.” Sash is 6-1, will settle for 4-1.
GP race 12 (5:34), Pegasus World Cup – Sadler-trained Higher Power (6) is the fastest, best horse in the field with big-time comeback workouts. He would be legit chalk. But a double-digit longshot to consider is Diamond Oops (3). The sharp gelding is Grade 1-placed around two turns, his speed figures at shorter distances are among the highest in the field, and he has won five of six at Gulfstream. Can he get nine furlongs? Maybe not, but other than Higher Power, this field is not exactly $3 million caliber.
SA race 8 (4:00 PT), G2 Palos Verdes – Settling for chalk in this modest sprint. Sadler-trained Flagstaff (3) seems a standout over second preference Speed Pass (6).
