Coast-to-coast wagering preview

Plenty opportunities Saturday, chronological order …

GP race 6 (2:34 ET), G3 Forward Gal – Odds-on favorites won this filly sprint four of the last seven years, which bodes well for Tonalist’s Shape (6). On figures, she is a cinch. However, the recent allowance win by Compensate (2) was at the expense of a next-out stakes winner, and at 5-1 odds Compensate is worth a gamble. Furthermore, interesting critique by Daily Racing Form workout analysts in the Gulfstream Clocker Report. “… (Tonalist’s Shape) does not seem quite as sharp as before previous start …”

FG race 5 (2:26 CT), $60k overnight stakes – A low-odds overlay at 5-2, Hieronymus (4) is solid in this mile turf stakes. He beat a good field last out, the runner-up returned to win a $200k stakes, the third-place finisher won a 94-Beyer dirt allowance. Hieronymus could have company on the front end, but should win on class. If less than 8-5, pass.

GP race 7 (3:04 ET), MSW – King Khozan (2) was only prepping in his creditable fifth-place debut, a race that produced two next-out winners. Trainer Bill Mott won with four of his last seven second-start MSW starters at Gulfstream; King Khozan should improve at 9-2. He’ll have to beat odds-on Palm Springs (9).

SA race 2 (1 PT), MSW – Only five entered, therefore no bet. But interested if second-time starter Eyes Open (1) will validate the smashing debut by Venetian Harbor, an early favorite for the Grade 2 Las Virgenes next Saturday. Eyes Open finished 11 lengths behind Venetian Harbor last out, and should improve with a race under her belt. First-time starter My Happy Girl (5) is favored in this seven-furlong sprint.

AQU race 8 (4:25 ET), G3 Withers – Is favorite Shotski (5) vulnerable? He faces a tougher pace scenario than the Remsen, which he won wire-to-wire. Leaning toward improving maiden winner Portos (8), whose 3-1 price is no bargain, and Display Stakes winner Vanzzy (7), at 8-1. Last year’s Display winner Sir Winston won the Belmont Stakes and returned Friday with a sharp 94-Beyer allowance comeback win.

OP race 6 (3:39 CT), $150k Martha Washington – Will be shocked if Taraz (3) starts at her curiously high program price of even-money. She looks like a 2-5 shot, even if it is her first route. No bet, but a fun filly to watch.

GP race 11 (5:04 ET), G3 Holy Bull – Lightly raced Toledo (1) has improved every start, his N1X runner-up finish last out was better than it looks on paper. He did not have a great trip. Second choice at 7-2, Toledo can upset odds-on comebacker Tiz the Law (3).

SA race 5 (2:30 PT), MSW – This turf sprint for maiden fillies includes 15-1 bomb Don’t Unzip Me (4), whose initial start on this course was better than it looks. Away last, three- and four-wide throughout, loomed wide into the lane, and went flat. With a clean break, expect her to outrun her odds. Top choices: Rakassah (14) and Bristol Bayou (3).

SA race 7 (3:30 PT), G2 San Marcos – Another bad-trip playback. Brown Storm (5) ran better than the line looks last out. Shuffled to last on the far turn, blocked into the lane, finished with run. Not sure if he can defeat top-choice favorite United (4), but Brown Storm figures to move forward with a clean trip. Trainer Michael McCarthy confirmed Saturday that Brown Storm will in fact be ridden by Hector Isaac Berrios, who knows Brown Storm’s owner from South America.

SA race 8 (4 PT), G2 San Pasqual – Midcourt (5) is a logical favorite after a better-than-looked third last out, although he is not that always quick from the gate. King Abner (4) has tactical speed, should get first run, and might spring an upset. Not that 4-1 is a great price.

First post: GP 12 noon (ET), AQU 1 p.m. (ET), FG 1:30 (CT), OP 2:05 (CT), SA 12:30 (PT).
