Jockey Edgar Morales was conscious and had movement in all his extremities, his agent, Derek Ducoing said, after being knocked unconscious in a one-horse accident at the quarter pole in the third race Friday at Fair Grounds.
Morales hit the ground hard when his mount, Fist of Rage, broke down badly while making a run at the lead along the inside rail. Fist of Rage had to be euthanized, trainer Matt Shirer confirmed. A trailing horse, Woman With a Book, managed to avoid his fallen rival and merely was pulled up out of the contest.
Ducoing said Morales lost consciousness for roughly ten minutes after the spill. Morales was transported to Tulane Medical Center and was awaiting diagnostics as of 3:00 Central on Friday, but no obviously severe injures beyond the concussion had surfaced.
