Cross-country longshot preview

What to do on a Saturday like this? Bet horses, of course. Longshots such as …

FG race 2 (11:30 CT), maiden special-weight – Global Brand (11) was only prepping in her sixth-place debut at five and a half. She lagged, finished with run, and galloped out in front. Sired by War Front, produced by multiple Grade 1 winner Marketing Mix, Global Brand should appreciate two turns. Global Brand is 10-1, will settle for half that.

FG race 8 (2:38 CT), $100k filly-mare turf stakes – Notapradaprice (5) had no shot last out due to a horrible trip. Anchored even after a sharp start, shuffled out of position early, she lost ground rallying wide through the far turn, and still finished fourth. Super effort. If her new rider uses her speed, Notapradaprice should get a great trip positioned second behind Dream Passage. Notapradaprice is listed at a generous 8-1.

FG race 9 (3:10 CT), Grade 2 New Orleans Classic – Fearless (3) figures to make the lead. If he reproduces the 99 Beyer he earned in his last-out allowance romp, he can be gone in his third career start. Todd Pletcher trainees moving up the ladder following quality wins tend to hold form. May have to settle for less than 9-2, however.

GP race 9 (4:49 ET), $75k turf sprint stakes – Tons of speed in this five-furlong dash for 3-year-old fillies. Compensate (2), the field’s only three-time winner, is effective rallying from off. She ran super her only previous turf try; her dam won her first three turf starts. Compensate is listed at 6-1, that price should hold.

GP race 11 (5:52 ET), $75k turf sprint stakes – Trainer Brendan Walsh is 6-for-17 the past two years with foreign shippers in their U.S. debut. Only one winner was favored. Walsh unveils multiple Group-placed Guildsman (1) in this stakes race for 3-year-olds. It looks like a “go” at 6-1.

HOU race 5 (8:36 CT), $75k sprint stakes – A visually impressive maiden win by No Mas Tequila (3) hints she can repeat in this Texas-bred race. No Mas Tequila benefitted from an outside draw last time. Now she will be under pressure from an inside draw, but she won like a filly that can take heat and keep running. It’s a risk worth taking at 6-1.

Six prime plays are listed above, others did not make the cut for a variety of reasons. For the sake of “action,” they are: FG race 4, Koko Star (3); SA race 3, Flying to the Line (7); FG race 7, Reprobate (4); and FG race 12, Royal Act (8).

That’s a wrap, for now.
