Santa Anita: Ward 'n Jerry wins first stakes in San Luis Rey

Ward 'n Jerry, who could have been claimed for $40,000 at Del Mar last summer, won the first stakes of his career in Saturday's Grade 3 San Luis Rey Stakes at 1 1-2 miles on turf.

Ridden by Flavien Prat, Ward 'n Jerry had an ideal trip. The 9-5 second choice, Ward 'n Jerry was third on the backstretch, rallied three-wide on the turn before taking the lead in the stretch. Ward 'n Jerry ($5.60) finished 1 1-4 lengths in front of 6-1 Camino Del Paraiso, who was followed by even-money favorite Oscar Dominguez.

Ward 'n Jerry, a 7-year-old gelding, races for Larry and Marianne Williams and trainer Mike Puype.
