Cartel Jess Rockin, the champion 2-year-old Quarter Horse filly of 2019, has been retired after she was diagnosed with a leg injury following a second-place finish in time trials for the Los Alamitos Oaks on March 7.
Cartel Jess Rockin earned a berth in Saturday's final, but will not start. She was entered to qualify for 10th-place prize money in the field of 10.
Owned by the family of the late Ron Hartley, Cartel Jess Rockin was trained by John Cooper and won 4 of 12 starts and earned $849,101. She was purchased for $18,000 at Heritage Place sales in Oklahoma City as a yearling.
The highlight of her career was a surprise victory in the $1,903,275 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity in December which Hartley attended. Hartley died after a lengthy illness in January.
Cooper told Los Alamitos publicity that Cartel Jess Rockin underwent surgery after the injury was detected and will recuperate at a local farm.
