Tiz the Law further entrenched himself as one of the favorites for the Kentucky Derby when posting a convincing victory Saturday in the 69th running of the Grade 1, $750,000 Curlin Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.
Confidently ridden by Manny Franco, Tiz the Law stalked the pace set by longshot Shivaree and Ete Indien before moving to the lead at the top of the stretch. From there, the New York-bred steadily widened, winning by about 3 1/2 lengths when finishing the 1 1/8-mile distance in 1:50.00 over a fast track.
Tiz the Law paid $4.80 as favorite.
Tiz the Law, trained by Barclay Tagg for the Sackatoga Stable, earned 100 of the 170 qualifying points toward the 146th Kentucky Derby, which has been postponed from its original May 2 date to Sept. 5 because of the ongoing Coronavirus crisis. The points are awarded to the top four finishers on a 100-40-20-10 basis.
Shivaree, at least 80-1, held second under Emisael Jaramillo, about a half-length before Ete Indien, who saved third by about a neck over Gouverneur Morris.
An original field of 13 3-year-olds was reduced to nine with these four early scratches: Disc Jockey, Soros, Ajaaweed, and Sassy But Smart.
The $2 exacta (7-2) paid $188.40, the $1 trifecta (7-2-12) returned $328.90, and the 10-cent superfecta (7-2-12-5) was worth $129.30.
Mike Welsch will have the complete Florida Derby recap up before long on www.drf.com.
