Fonner Park drops one day of racing

Fonner Park announced Tuesday it has dropped one day of racing from its calendar, May 20. It is a Wednesday card, and it was part of 12 additional dates of racing approved for the month of May. The one-day reduction is being made as more racing opportunities are coming on line in late May and early June.

In a press release, Fonner noted horses from their stable area are starting to move on to new meets.

"My first concern is that horses are not over-raced," said Chris Kotulak, chief executive officer of Fonner. "Apart from that, horseplayers do not like betting on small fields. There are now increased options for horsemen to race and relocate and the market share of Fonner Park is becoming reduced with horseplayers having additional racetracks upon which to wager.

"I am grateful that horsemen have come to run their horses with us at Fonner Park and I am grateful that we were able to pull off the feat of no spectator racing for nearly ten weeks. But the party is winding down."

The meet is scheduled to close May 27.
