CHIMNEY ROCK, ridden by Jose Ortiz, finally got the best of JACK AND NOAH following a stretch-long duel in a 5 1/2-furlong turf allowance that marked the first start for FOUR WHEEL DRIVE since he won the Nov. 2 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint.
Chimney Rock ran 2nd behind Four Wheel Drive in the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita, but more than 6 months later, the results were much different. While Chimney Rock broke sharply from an outer post in a full gate of 12, giving closest chase to free-wheeling Jack and Noah, but Four Wheel Drive was away sluggishly under Manny Franco as the 3-5 favorite from post 1.
Chimney Rock, a Louisiana-bred by Artie Schiller, was up in the final yards to win by a head, finishing in 1:04.27 over firm going. Four Wheel Drive, unbeaten in his 3 prior starts, struggled home 7th. The top four order was 11-4-3-5.
The winner is trained by Mike Maker for the Three Diamonds Farm of Kirk Wycoff.
The turf dash for 3yos was the last of 3 allowances on an 11-race Sunday card. The first group of stakes at the 26-day spring meet will be run next Saturday, led by the G3 Matt Winn for Ky. Derby hopefuls.
