The first-time starter Elmer ($31.60) won the third of 14 time trials at Ruidoso Downs on Friday to set the fastest time and gain a berth in the $1 million-estimated Ruidoso Futurity on June 7.

The winners of four trials and B Icy, who was second to Elmer, had the five fastest times in Friday's trials to secure positions in the final. The runners with the five fastest times from Saturday's 14 trials will gain berths in the final, completing the field.

Elmer, who was ridden by Federico Martinez for trainer Jose Meraz, ran 350 yards in 17.79 seconds, finishing three-quarters of a length in front of 2-1 favorite B Icy, who was timed in 17.896 seconds. B Icy had the second-fastest time on Friday.

The other qualifiers were trial race winners Misscandymountain, who won the 10th race in 17.90 seconds and paid $27.80; Tuckk, who won the first race in 17.934 seconds and paid $4.80 as the favorite; and Apollitical Redflash, the winner of the fourth race in 17.99 seconds.

Apollitical Redflash won by 2 1-2 lengths, the widest margin on Friday, and paid $5.80 as the favorite. Apollitical Redflash, trained by Clinton Crawford, had his third start on Friday. Earlier this spring, Apollitical Redflash was fourth in a maiden special weight race and third in a division of the Heritage Place Futurity trials at Remington Park.

It took a little more than five hours to run the trials. Through the day, the races were contested into a headwind that ranged from 7 to 16 miles per hour. Elmer raced into a headwind of 10 miles per hour.
