Anthony Lynch scored his first victory as a trainer in the second race at Laurel Park on Saturday as racing returned to Maryland for the first time in more than two months.
Lynch, 18, is the son of Maryland-based horseman Cal Lynch. Anthony awaited his chance to train by manning the family stable’s pony in the mornings as his older brother Charlie served as his father’s assistant and began training under his own name first. The brothers both still work alongside their father.
Anthony Lynch sent out his first starter in January and is now one for nine. Queen of Cause was trained by Cal Lynch last year at 2 before owner Frank Davino turned the horse over to Anthony. She defeated nine rivals in the nonwinners-of-two $16,000 claiming race for fillies and mares. Jorge Ruiz was aboard Queen of Cause, who paid $31.60.
