Retama Park near San Antonio has asked the Texas Racing Commission for a 24-date meet for Quarter Horses, starting July 3, the track announced Monday.
The track also announced plans to reopen for simulcasting on Friday, at 25 percent capacity. The track plans to simulcast Wednesday through Sunday.
Retama would race Thurdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 29, with the exception of Aug. 8 and Aug. 22. Purses are projeted to average a record $150,000 a program, according to the press release. The track is monitoring state and local policies before decisions are made on spectators.
“We want to thank all the racing stakeholders in the state who were supportive of the changes to the upcoming meet and are looking forward to a successful start on the holiday weekend,” said Angela Cooper, general manager of Retama Park.
Retama had originally been scheduled to conduct a mixed meet for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses. During a commission meeting last week, industry members told the agency talks were in the works to transfer Thoroughbred purse funds to Lone Star Park.
