Racing returns to Belmont Park this afternoon with a first post for the 10-race card slightly adjusted to 1:20 ET.
The feature id the Grade 3 Beaugay, which features an intriguing matchup between multiple Grade 1 winners Rushing Fall and Got Stormy. #2 Fifty Five has been scratched. I sided with Rushing Fall, as she appears to be the controlling speed and may be more proficient over this distance than her main rival. Chad Brown has won this race each of the last two years with horses returning from similar long layoffs - A Raving Beauty in 2018 (195-day layoff), Homerique last year (216-day layoff).
Race 3 is the first 2yo race of the year in NY. Scratch #4 Count the Shells. The three inside runners all figure to take money, led by Fauci for 2yo ace Wesley Ward. He has much more of a turf pedigree on the bottom but there is quality there and he shows up with some fast works. Not much of a betting race but it's always interesting to watch these races for later.
Race 6 is an excellent 1x allowance for fillies and mares on the grass. While many can win, I went for a price with Hungry Kitten. She is just a horse who, in my opinion, is better than she looks on paper and may be set to move forward in her second start of the year after a likely prep at Tampa where she was running late. Her maiden win at Churchill on Derby Day last year was impressive while making a big late run.
The 8th features the turf debut of the polarizing Hidden Scroll. Maybe he takes to it and runs a big one but I'm not taking a shortish price on him. I went for the logical Value Proposition, who appears to have much upside for top connections.
It's good to be back. Good luck to all and let's hope the rain holds off.
