A pair of Grade 1 races – the Santa Anita Derby and Hollywood Gold Cup – top the seven-stakes card Saturday at Santa Anita. Average field size – 6.6 per race. Preview …
Race 1 – Flavien Prat rides six program favorites including Super Patriot (2) in this Cal-bred filly-mare turf mile stakes. Cordiality (6) might be loose, but she has not started in a year. Super Patriot is legit; 5-1 “longshot” Sedamar (1) figures as upset/exacta candidate.
Race 2 – The debut romp Friday by 2-year-old Bolden flatters Herd Immunity (4), who worked in company with Bolden last week at San Luis Rey. Herd Immunity’s main rival is top choice Exhalting (6), whose recent gate work was sharp. The knock on Exhalting – second-crop stallion Chitu does not have a debut winner from 23 runners.
Race 3 – Kneedeepinsnow (4) can wire his modest entry-level allowance/optional claiming sprint for 3-year-olds and up on dirt, the type race you’d think would attract a big field. Not anymore. From late-December to now, N1X field size: 8, 7, 6, 8 and 6.
Race 4 – A turf sprint stakes for 3-year-olds, which might mean chalk. Since racing resumed in March, favorites are 10-for-15 in turf sprints. Bodes well for program favorite She’s So Special (2) and top choice Rookie Mistake (4).
Race 5 – Four left in the Grade 2 Santa Anita Oaks, same as last year. The favorite Swiss Skydiver (1) has won in Kentucky, Florida and Arkansas including two big graded wins. She must catch likely pacesetter Merneith (2) and this bettor’s top choice, Speech (3).
Race 6 – Cezanne (1) sold last year for $3.65 million. The debut 3-year-old has some speed, which he will need from the inside post. Trainer Bob Baffert: “I don’t think he’s a sprinter …” For more on Cezanne: https://bit.ly/30egQSs
Race 7 – Grade 2 winner Prince Earl (3) stands out in this stakes race for Cal-bred older horses at a mile on turf. Prince Earl is listed at 2-1. That price would be a gift.
Race 8 – Authentic (7), Honor A. P. (6) and others in the Santa Anita Derby. Authentic is the pick, but it’s a close call. Trifecta bomber: maiden Friar’s Road (1) has run well at a mile and one-eighth. He could hit the board at 20-1.
Race 9 – Stablemates K P All Systems Go (3) and Hariboux (7) top this turf stakes for 3-year-olds, while upset candidate Club Aspen (2) is back at his preferred two-turn trip.
Race 10 – Six entered the Hollywood Gold Cup, led by top choice Improbable (5) and Higher Power (3). This handicapper picked Improbable, but at least one ticket will include “all” including double-digit longshots Brown Storm (4) and Parsimony (1).
Race 11 – Turn out the lights, the party’s over. Dim Lights (9) at 4-1 is the best bet on the card. Gate to wire in this Cal-bred filly-mare sprint.
