First post moves to 1 p.m. Friday. Preview ...
Race 1 – Affianced (5), controlling speed in this N1X turf mile, meets two interesting Euro-shippers. Avenue de France (2) won both starts in France and has worked well, though jockey Drayden Van Dyke is plagued by second-itis: 4-for-54 with 10 seconds since racing resumed. Over Attracted (6) is well-meant for her U.S. debut, according to trainer Carla Gaines: “We think we’re going to win, even though it is tough.” Program favorite Shines Her Light (3) is trained by John Sadler, whose uncharacteristic streak of eight successive losing favorites is likely to end soon.
Race 2 – A five-runner maiden field at one mile looks like an Uncle Mo exacta. Top choice Uncle Addouma (5) figures to improve off his debut prep, program favorite Uncle Chuck (1) debuts with solid works. His siblings include 114-Beyer Maclean’s Music and G3 winners Kentuckian and Electric Forest. Interesting race, minimal value.
Race 3 – Going to Vegas (8) benefits by a red-hot trainer-jockey combo, Peter Miller and Flavien Prat went 5-for-7 last week. More important than human statistics is the simple fact two-time Santa Anita turf winner Going to Vegas is fast enough for this $50k claiming turf route. But for value, Madame Bourbon (2) might be worth backing at 6-1. The trouble-prone filly drops in class, her closing style suits the pace scenario. Upset?
Race 4 – Conquest Cobra (2) is supposed to win this $20k claiming route at a short price. It’s a five-horse field, the favorite is 6-5. Hooray!
Race 5 – The only guy riding as well as Prat is Mike Smith, who takes over on six-start maiden Tropical Terror (9) in this Cal-bred maiden turf mile. Tropical Terror was compromised by wide trips his last three runner-up finishes. For the record, Smith’s win rate since racing resumed is 31.4 percent; Prat's is 31.9 percent.
Race 6 – Abusive Gary (2) is the choice. But seriously, can you trust a horse dropping from N1X to $12.5k claiming N2L?
Race 7 – Great Return (4), gate to wire. That’s how it looks in this N2X turf sprint otherwise void of speed. Once upon a time, turf sprints at Santa Anita provided the most attractive wagering contests on the circuit. That was before racing was discontinued on the hillside course. These days, turf sprints are on the flat and chalk prevails. Since racing resumed, turf-sprint favorites are 11 for 17 and all but two winners paid single digits. Great Return is 8-5 and “should” win if she can hold off the closing rally of Querelle (3).
Race 8 – Kirsch Truffle (2) had a brutal trip last out and was best in a similar maiden-20 sprint. But with the scratch of Enriched by Deb, maybe speedster Elemental (6) can clear the field and steal the race. At program odds of 5-1, she might be worth a gamble.
