Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., who has won 14 races through the first seven days of the Belmont Park spring/summer meet, will be out of action until Belmont Stakes Day due to suspensions.
On Saturday, Ortiz will be serving the final day of a suspension handed him by the California stewards for an infraction at Santa Anita on Memorial Day. Ortiz was given three days for his ride on Rockemperor in the Grade 2 Charlie Whittingham, which resulted in his horse being disqualified from second to third. Ortiz served May 31 and June 5. He picked up an additional day for riding the four stakes run at Belmont on June 6.
Ortiz will sit out Sunday, Thursday and Friday due to a three-day suspension handed him by the New York stewards for a careless riding incident during the running of Belmont’s third race on June 4.
Ortiz won that race on Big Thicket. At the there-sixteenths pole, he guided Big Thicket off the rail and made contact with Bustin Shout, who finished second. The stewards conducted an inquiry into that race but ultimately ruled that the outcome of the race was not affected by the incident.
Thus, Ortiz will next be riding on June 20. One of his mounts will be Dr Post in the Belmont Stakes.
On Saturday, Ortiz guided Dr Post through a half-mile workout in 48.87 seconds over the main track in company with fellow Belmont starter Farmington Road.
