Apprentice jockey Tanner Fincher, who won his first race Aug. 2, will team with his father, top New Mexico-based trainer Todd Fincher, in Satudray's second race at Ruidoso Downs. The 18-year-old rides Fincher trainee Jasmine Baby in the maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies bred in New Mexico. Jasmine Baby is a homebred for Reliance Ranches.
Tanner Fincher's first win came at Ruidoso Downs, aboard Cool and Quick in a maiden special weight for trainer Jose R. Gonzalez, Jr. It was his sixth career mount.
"He's always said he wanted to ride," Todd Fincher said of Tanner. "I told him I'd help him anyway I can.
"Growing up on the racetrack, most kids want to do it."
Todd Fincher is a former jockey. He said he began riding at 16 and won his first race with his 24th starter. Todd Fincher has gone on to become one of the top trainers in New Mexico.
