Maximum Security, the champion 3-year-old male of 2019, won his sixth consecutive race with a frontrunning score in Satuday's Grade 1 Pacific Classic at Del Mar.
Ridden by Abel Cedillo, Maximum Security won by three lengths over Sharp Samurai, a multiple stakes winner on turf who had his stakes debut on dirt on Saturday. Sent off as a strong favorite in a field of six, Maximum Security ($2.80) ran 1 1-4 miles in 2:01.24.
Sharp Samurai finished 2 3-4 lengths in front of Midcourt, who was followed by Higher Power, Mirinaque and Dark Vader.
Sharp Samurai was within a half-length of Maximum Security with a quarter-mile remaining but could not get closer. Maximum Security set early fractions of 23.93 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 47.98 for a half-mile, holding an advantage over Sharp Samurai.
The Pacific Classic was the 10th win in 12 starts for Maximum Security who is best known for finishing first in the 2019 Kentucky Derby only to be disqualified and placed 17th for causing interference on the turn.
The Pacific Classic was Maximum Security's third win of 2020, preceded by the $20 million Saudi Cup on Feb. 29 and the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap here on July 25. Maximum Security races for Gary and Mary West and the Coolmore syndicate and trainer Bob Baffert.
