LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Art Collector, the likely second wagering choice Saturday in the 146th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, is out after suffering a minor foot ailment.
The bombshell of bad news spread quickly at Churchill and beyond Tuesday morning, shortly after Art Collector did not appear on the track for regular training. Brian Hernandez Jr., who had ridden the colt in his four races this year, all open-lengths victories, confirmed the defection.
“We were on top of the world,” said Hernandez. “Now we’ll be going day-to-day, just trying to get by.”
Owner-breeder Bruce Lunsford and trainer Tom Drury Jr. were not immediately available for comment.
This story will be expanded when more information is available.
The post-position draw for the Derby is set for Tuesday morning at 11 Eastern. Tiz the Law, who was scheduled to arrive here this morning from New York, now figures as an odds-on favorite in an expected field of 17.
