Jockey Rico Flores on Thursday remained in the hospital as he continues to recuperate from injuries sustained in a Tuesday spill at Louisiana Downs. Flores was thrown from his mount, All About Clara, when she fell. Sally Warne, the longtime girlfriend of Flores, talked to the rider this week and on Thursday provided the following update at the request of Daily Racing Form.
Flores said he sustained a cervical spine injury.
"He's alert and has movement and doctors are evaluating him," Warne said. "He's grateful for all the prayers and concern."
Warne said signs of improvement include the fact that Flores has a good appetite.
"He's eating like only Rico can eat," she said.
"He just wants to let everyone know he's doing good."
Flores has been race riding since 1994 and has won a number of stakes on the circuit in Louisiana.
A “Go Fund Me” account has been started for Flores.
