Welder won his turf debut on Friday night in the $70,000 Remington Park Turf Sprint for Oklahoma-breds, covering five furlongs on firm ground in a quick 55.53 seconds.
Welder, at 2-5, raced in third early, behind an opening quarter in 21.08 seconds. The half-mile went in 43.44 seconds as he rallied through the stretch for a neck victory over Shannon C. David Cabrera was aboard for Ra-Max Farms and trainer Theresa Luneack.
Welder is entered in the $60,000 David M. Vance on Sunday at Remington, but his connections opted to run in the Oklahoma-bred spot Friday night in what is meant as his springboard to the Oklahoma Classics Sprint.
