Golden Pal broke running and went on to score a front-running victory in the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint at Keeneland as jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. and trainer Wesley Ward won this race for the second straight year.
Cowan rallied to get second narrowly over Ubettabelieveit, who broke slow and spotted the field about three lengths early.
Golden Pal, a son of Uncle Mo out of 2015 BC Turf Sprint runner-up Lady Shipman, is owned and bred by Randall Lowe.
Breaking from post 14, Golden Pal quickly opened up a clear advantage after a quarter of 21.62 seconds. Fearful of going too fast too early, Ortiz took a hold of Golden Pal. At that point Bodenhemer came up to challenge Golden Pal, who then rebroke and opened up a clear advantage around the turn.
He carved out fractions of 44.63 seconds and covered the 5 1-2 furlongs in 1:02.82. Golden Pal returned $3.60 as the favorite.
“He’s just amazing, I got a little worried on the backside Irad took a hold of him, he lost a little momentum when he took a pretty good hold of hm,” Ward said. “He accelerated down the and he’s a champion colt.”
Golden Pal has now won twice in four starts with a runner-up loss in the Grade 2 Norfolk Stakes.
