Jockey Mario Gutierrez, best known for winning the Kentucky Derby twice, was taken from the Santa Anita turf course in an ambulance after being involved in a one-horse spill a few strides after the finish of Sunday's fifth race.
Gutierrez was thrown from first-time starter Squeaky Cheeky, who fell while galloping out at the back of a field of seven. Squeaky Cheeky, who trailed the field through the final sixteenth, was euthanized as a result of a leg injury, stewards said.
Gutierrez was placed on a safety board by ambulance personnel and was moving his arms and legs.
Gutierrez is seventh in the standings at the current winter-spring meeting with 16 wins.
