Leprino ($12.80) closed from fifth in a field of eight to win the first race at Del Mar on Friday's opening day of the summer meeting.
Ridden by Abel Cedillo for trainer Steve Miyadi, Leprino finished a half-length in front of 5-1 Causeididitmyway, who was the subject of a significant late gamble. Causeididitmyway was 13-1 as the field was being loaded.
The race was run at a mile for $14,000 to $16,000 claimers.
Leprino won the first race of a 50-cent early pick five that drew a robust pool of $1,078,847, well above a pool of $802,330 in 2019, the last year the track hosted customers. This year, the ontrack audience, at least for the start of the meeting, is restricted to customers with seat reservations and no walk-up sales.
Track officials expect an ontrack audience of approximately 15,000 to 16,000 this afternoon.
