Canterbury Park announced it has delayed first post for Wednesday's card to 8:05 p.m. Central in the face of a forcasted, early evening heat index of 105 degrees. The track also has called off the card's first five races, which are for Thoroughbreds. Canterbury is scheduled to run seven races for Quarter Horses. The original card of 12 races had an initial first post of 5 p.m.
Canterbury made the decision after consulting with the veterinary staff of the Minnesota Racing Commission. The decision was also made in agreement with the Minnesota Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association.
The races for Quarter Horses are the sixth through 12th and are trials for the Northlands Futurity and Canterbury Park Quarter Horse Derby.
“We made the decision to delay Wednesday racing, based on the forecast of an extremely high heat index, with the safety of all participants, horses, jockeys, staff and spectators, in mind,” Andrew Offerman, vice president of racing for Canterbury, said in a press release. “We are confident that by 8 p.m. the temperatures will have decreased to a comfortable and safe level.”
There is no admission charge Wednesday, and indoor seating is free. Gates open at 7 p.m.
