Medina Spirit, the first-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby on May 1, led throughout Sunday’s $100,500 Shared Belief Stakes, the colt’s first start since a third-place finish in the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico on May 15.
Medina Spirit ($3.80) finished 1 1-4 lengths in front of 8-5 Rock Your World, the winner of the Santa Anita Derby in April who had not raced since a sixth-place finish in the Belmont Stakes on June 5.
The stewards conducted an inquiry into the stretch run, focusing on whether contact between Team Merchants and Stilleto Boy in the stretch affected the order of finish. After a lengthy inquiry, there was no change to the order of finish.
Ridden by John Velazquez, Medina Spirit ran a mile in 1:37.29. Medina Spirit set fractions of 22.52 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 46.92 for a half-mile, closely pursued by Rock Your World to his outside.
Those two were joined on the turn by Team Merchants, who made a three-wide move to briefly pose a threat.
Rock Your World finished 2 1-4 lengths clear of 22-1 Stilleto Boy, who closed with a wide run to finish third. The Great One finished fourth, followed by Team Merchants and Willy the Cobbler.
Medina Spirit's Kentucky Derby win is in jeopardy, pending regulatory hearings in Kentucky. The colt was found to have tested positive for a banned medication after the Kentucky Derby, a case that has been the subject of court hearings in recent months.
Owned by Amr Zedan and trained by Bob Baffert, Medina Spirit has won 4 of 8 starts.
The Shared Belief Stakes was a prep for the Grade 1 Pennsylvania Derby at Parx Racing on Sept. 25 for Medina Spirit and possibly Rock Your World.
