Flightline won his debut in a maiden special weight race by 13 1-4 lengths at six furlongs at Santa Anita in April. Sunday at Del Mar, Flightline won a six-furlong allowance race by 12 3-4 lengths in 1:08.05, further enhancing his lofty reputation.
Ridden by Flavien Prat, Flightline ($2.40) stalked 15-1 Notre Dame briefly on the backstretch before taking a lead. Prat did not urge Flightline through the stretch.
Trainer John Sadler said the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes for 3-year-olds at seven furlongs at Santa Anita on Dec. 26 is a long-range goal for Flightline, a $1 million yearling purchase who races for the partnership of Hronis Racing, Summer Wind Equine, West Point Thoroughbreds, Siena Farm and Woodford Racing.
Flightline was sidelined briefly in the summer because of a foot abscess, Sadler said on Friday.
Sunday's win is certain to set off speculation of how Flightline will be raced in coming months, but Sadler deflected the subject while walking away from the winner's circle.
