The Texas Thoroughbred Association has announced its "human" award winners for 2020. The organization, which previously annoouncd its equine champions, will not have its traditional banquet honoring all of the winners due to the pandemic. The TTA instead has produced a video featuring the winners, which is posted on Facebook.
Jim McIngvale and Joe Straus, Jr., were honored with the T.I. "Pops" Harkins Award for Lifetime Achievement.
McIngvale, who owns Gallery Furniture in Houston, was honored for his long history of sponsoring stakes, as well as other racing promotions he has developed and his continual charitable acts for those in need, according to a press release. He is the owner of champion Runhappy.
Straus was honored for his key role in the passage of pari-mutuel wagering laws in Texas, according to a press release. He is the co-founder of Retama Park near San Antonio. He also serves as chairman of the Texas Horse Racing Hall of Fame and is a longtime breeder and owner.
Bill Tracy and Martha Claussen received the Allen Bogan Memorial Award as Texas Thoroughbred Association Members of the Year.
Tracy is a longtime industry member and the current farm manager of Eureka Thoroughbred Farm in Fredericksburg, Texas, according to a press release. He has served on the TTA board for nearly 20 years, and has been president of the Texas Thoroughbred Educational Fund. Tracy has worked closely with state legislators to promote the sport in Texas.
Claussen is a 25-year veteran of the Texas horse racing industry, with her first affiliation with the state coming in 1997 when she was brought on as publicity director for Sam Houston Race Park, according to a press release. Claussen has promoted the state's racing industry with professionalism and enthusiasm, whether through her work writing and distributing press releases, appearing on track simulcast programming, or reaching out through social media channels.
The champion Texas-breds are Con Lima, 2-year-old filly; Hulen, 2-year-old colt or gelding; Boerne, 3-year-old filly; Gold Pilot, 3-year-old colt or gelding; Ima Discreet Lady, older filly or mare; Sunlit Song, co-champion older horse; Redatory, co-champion older horse and Texas-bred of the Year; Meme Jo, champion claimer; My Silver Song, champion broodmare.
