Sam Houston Race Park will put the spotlight on Texas-breds on Saturday night, when it closes out its Quarter Horse meet with five stakes led by the $100,000 Willie Hickman Memorial.
Famous Chief, who in his last start won the Grade 2 Sam Houston Classic, is the horse to beat in the Hickman. The 400-yard race honors a longtime member of the racing community who spent 20 years as an official with Sam Houston. Hickman died in March, according to a press release from Sam Houston. This meet, Sam Houston has admirably run stakes named for a number of racing community members who have died over the last few years.
The stakes on Saturday night start early, with $50,000 Sam Houston at 250 yards slotted as the second race on the 10-race card. El Tartanero Jess is going for his fifth consecutive win. He will start from the rail and he's broken on top in three of his last four starts.
Thoroughbred regulars Carl Moore and trainer Karen Jacks will see Quarter Horse stakes action with Slp Mighty High in the $50,000 Jesse Yoakum Memorial. It will be run over 870 yards. Shockinglyfamous should go favored off a runner-up finish in the Grade 1 Remington Park Distance Championship. Yoakum, a longtime trainer, died in October 2019. His wife, Sharon, and son, Jerry Lee, will lead the trophy presentation Saturday night, according to the press release from Sam Houston.
