Mendelssohn got a terrific ground-saving ride under Ryan Moore en route to victory Friday in the 11th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf here at Del Mar.
Trained by Aidan O’Brien for the Coolmore team, Mendelssohn returned $11.60 as the very lukewarm favorite in a field of 14 after finishing the one-mile distance in 1:35.97 over a firm course.
Untamed Domain was second by a length, with Voting Control third and Catholic Boy fourth.
Always close while tracking the leader, Sands of Mali, to the top of the stretch, Mendelssohn angled out smartly for the drive and got first run on the rest. A Kentucky-bred colt by the late Scat Daddy, Mendelssohn was coming off a runner-up finish at 50-1 in a Group 1 race at Doncaster in England and was getting first Lasix for the first time, as were the other five European starters in the race.
The $2 exacta (1-2) paid $146.60, the $1 trifecta (1-2-8) returned $603.50, and the 10-cent superfecta (1-2-8-4) was worth $320.68.
Marcus Hersh will have the full Juvenile Turf recap on www.drf.com before too long.
Up next is the 34th running of the BC Distaff (R9, post 4:35 Pacific).
