Forever Unbridled rallied four-wide on the turn to win Friday's Breeders' Cup Distaff and solidify her status as the champion older female of 2017.
Forever Unbridled won by a half-length over Abel Tasman, who rallied from last in the field of eight. Forever Unbridled ($9.40) ran 1 1-8 miles in 1:50.25.
Paradise Woods, who was always close to the front, finished third, followed by Elate, Mopotism, Champagne Room, ROmantic Vision and Stellar Wind.
Avel Tasman is very likely to be named champion 3-year-old filly off this performance, and three consecutive Grade 1 races earlier this year.
Elate and Stellar Wind were disappointing. Elate finsihed fourth. She was three-wide on the backstretch and well-placed entering the stretch but could not sustain the rally.
Stellar Wind raced on the inside to the stretch and failed to respond to urging from jockey Victor Espinoza.
Forever Unbridled, ridden by John Velazquez, raced wide throughout. She was four-wide in sixth-place on the turn and was in command of the race in early stretch. A 5-year-old mare by Unbridled's Song, Forever Unbridled races for owner Charles Fipke and trainer Dallas Stewart.
Forever Unbridled won the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis Handicap at Churchill Downs in June and the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes at SAratoga in August in her only previous starts this year. A winner of 8 of 17 starts, Forever Unbridled was third in the 2016 BC Distaff at Santa Anita.
