Tooreen Dancer (9) will have her American debut and first start on turf in Friday's third race, an optional claimer at a mile for fillies and mares.
It is not often that European imports arrive in Southern California without race experience on grass.
Trained by Phil D'Amato, Tooreen Dancer won her debut in a maiden race at seven furlongs on the all-weather surface at Dundalk, Ireland last November. She has not started since. The filly arrived in California in late winter and has had regular workouts since late March.
Tooreen Dancer ran in a maiden race that was somewhat productive. Runner-up Heat of the Day won a maiden race two races later. Cloudy Miss, who finished third, needed six more races to beat maidens, finally doing so earlier this month in a one-mile handicap on turf at Bellewstown, Ireland. None of the other 11 runners have won since the November race.
Tooreen Dancer, who will be ridden by Norberto Arroyo, Jr., is an 8-1 shot in a field of 11. The group is led by Pacific Wind, who was third in her last two starts, both at Santa Anita - the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes at a mile on turf on May 6 and the Grade 2 Honeymoon Stakes at 1 1-8 miles on turf on June 17.
A win by Tooreen Dancer against an accomplished local filly such as Pacific Wind would be a surprise.
