Usain Bolt, the legendary sprinter, could only finish third to Justin Gatlin in Saturday's 100-meter dash at the World Championships in London.
The loss came a few hours, and 5,400 miles, away from Del Mar where Bolt d'Oro, a 2-year-old colt named in honor of the sprinter, will have his debut in Saturday's seventh race for maidens at 6 1-2 furlongs.
Owner and trainer Mick Ruis has talked glowingly of Bolt d'Oro in advance of this afternoon's race. Bolt d'Oro, a Medaglia d'Oro colt, is the 7-2 morning-line favorite in a field of 10 and is likely to be a much shorter price. Ruis paid $630,000 for the colt as a yearling last year.
Bolt D'Oro will still be a value compared to Usain Bolt, who was 2-5 with British bookmakers compared to about 5-1 Gatlin.
