Del Mar Sunday: stats, works, gambling

Week three of the Del Mar meet concludes Sunday with an interesting card replete with gambling opportunities. Preview …

Race 2 – Strange stat applies to standout Zuzanna (5) in this claiming turf route for fillies and mares: favorites at a mile on turf are just 1-for-21. Zuzanna will start at lower odds than her 2-1 morning line; she is the most probable winner on the card.

Race 3 – First-time starter Gas Station Sushi (10), a well-regarded 2yo filly trained by Richard Baltas, acts like the real deal. In the Daily Racing Form "Del Mar Clocker Report," workout analysts Donald Harris and Toby Turrell wrote this about the July 31 work by Gas Station Sushi:

“Big, stout, good-looking filly certainly grabbed our attention here when running away from Gaines trainee Quinnie and stablemate Pasadena Princess. A threat, to be sure. RATING: B”

Race 5 – Evenly matched Cal-bred 2yos sprint five and a half in the $100k Graduation Stakes. Favorites have won the last three renewals; 8 of the last 17. Smokem (2) is the program favorite off his visually impressive debut opening week; the horse he beat, second-start maiden Continental Divide (11), is sure to improve. The top choice is Drizzy (10), working very well for his first start since a May 20 debut win. Use all three.

Race 7 – How has 2yo maiden Cal-bred Take the One O One (9) trained since his promising runner-up debut? Here’s what Harris and Turrell wrote in the DRF "DMR Clocker Report" regarding his July 26 workout:

“This is a very good-looking colt. Impressive today when striding clear of 2-year-old winner Meet My Kitty with alarming ease. Not acting like a maiden. RATING: B+”

Race 8 – Want to back a front-runner on the Del Mar turf? If so, the La Jolla distance of a mile and a sixteenth is the right trip. Four of the last 10 turf races at the distance were won by the pacesetter. The trend applies to front-runner Monster Man (9), the speed of the G2 La Jolla for 3yos.

Monster Man is listed at 9-2 in a wide-open field that includes top-choice favorite Sharp Samurai (7), Placido (3) and Colonist (2).

First post Sunday is 2 p.m.
