Saratoga Sunday preview

Race 2:  Experience can go a long way in the two-turn turf routes for 2-year-old maidens.  In that case, the edge here goes to Escapade and Wild and Funny.  They will both stretch out off of solid debut efforts sprinting, the former over turf at Belmont, the latter in a synthetic stake at Woodbine where she closed to be 2nd to the talented Dream It Is.

Golden Orb is a firster to take seriously.  She is by Orb, who is off to a good start as a sire of turf runners - from a limited sample, of course - and from the family of Flower Bowl and American Oaks winner Pure Clan on the dam-side.  She is trained by Christophe Clement, who is 6-for-17 (35%) with 2-year-old first time starters in turf routes at Saratoga over the past five meets, good for a $5.10 ROI.

Race 3:  The Alydar has a field of five after the scratch of Breaking Lucky, who finished 3rd in yesterday's Whitney behind an impressive Gun Runner.

Mohaymen is looking to turn things around for Kiaran McLaughlin as he makes a turf-to-dirt switch and adds blinkers for the first time.  He can't win this race unless he does.

Rally Cry becomes the horse to beat for Pletcher, and his speed might play in this short field, but he does have to stretch out, and he is no cinch to get the the demanding two-turn, nine furlongs up here.

Conquest Windycity exits a poor performance in the Grade 3 Cornhusker at Prairie Meadows, but he is an improved horse this year for his underrated trainer.

Race 4:  Longshot look to Millies Party Boy making his second start as a 3-year-old following a set up spin at Monmouth vs. a tough field.  He goes for low-profile connections, but he ran an excellent race at a huge price in his lone start last year.

Race 5:  Good spot for the speedy Cozzy Spring to try turf following back-to-back front-running scores on the main track.  She has turf in her pedigree and meets a field that has failed to inspire recently.

Another Genius is off the layoff for Linda Rice and eligible to improve after winning both turf sprints she tried last year.

Race 6:  Ten 2-year-old fillies will sprint 5 1/2 furlongs, nine of them first time starters.

Honey Graeme the one to start with.  She debuts for Rick Violette, who is among the very best in this game with 2-ear-old first time starters in dirt sprints.  Expect her to be ready to run.

My Bronx Tail starts at the other end of that spectrum.  She is trained by Bill Mott, among the best in this game with any kind of horse, anywhere, but not one who is too concerned with cranking up his babies.  My Bronx Tail does, however, have a precocious pedigree.

Mockey is a Distorted Humor half to the fast Bay of Plenty, who raced for these connections.  Kiaran's firsters can be difficult to read, but this filly is bred and appears to be training well up to her debut.

Race 10:  Excellent running of the Troy for turf sprinters.  Long on Value is back from overseas excursion that saw him just miss in the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint in Dubai, before finishing un-placed at Ascot. He won the Lucky Coin over this course and distance last summer, before missing in a blanket finish in this race in hs next start.

Pure Sensation went to Parx last month and crushed a couple of these horses with a big 110 Beyer.  Prior to that he finished an under-appreciated 4th in Disco Partner's world record Jaipur.

Green Mask also went well in the Jaipur, then backed that race up extremely well when steamrolling the Grade 2 Highlander at Woodbine with a 110 Beyer of his own.

Holding Gold another contender entering in the best form of his career.  He finished just behind Green Mask in the Jaipur, and has previously defeated that rival on the square in the Shakertown.
