Marty McGee just tweeted that Gunnevera is Travers Stakes-bound after winning his comeback today at Gulfstream.
Does Gunnevera make like the 67th horse with at least possible intentions on the Travers? It sure feels like it.
Given the completely unsettled 3-year-old picture, most people are anticipating a field for the Travers that might require an also eligible list beyond the 14 who will comprise the body of the race.
Why not? It actually makes sense. I mean, is there a 3-year-old out there right now who anyone should be afraid of? Who wouldn't want to take a shot at such a prestigious event with a $1.25 million purse?
For what it's worth, the conditions for the Travers as listed in the current Saratogs stakes book stipulates "Graded stakes winners preferred." After that, graded stakes placed horses get second preference, with total earnings in 2017 being the final determinator among "horses of equal preference."
Maybe that will help you indentify which horses might up on the outside, looking in.
The Travers will be run on August 26.
