Five $50,000 stakes are featured on the 10-race card that begins with an exhibition race at 1:30 p.m. Pacific. Despite the betting profile shown in the DRF, there is no wagering on the three-horse field of 2-year-olds owned and trained by Glenn Todd.
The Pacific Customs Brokers Classic Handicap is billed as the feature, but of more significance is the Sir Winston Churchill Derby Trial. The 1 1/16 miles race for 3-year-olds is the final local prep for the Grade 3, $150,000 British Columbia Derby Sept. 9. The Trial goes as Race 5 with A. P. Zona the 4-5 morning-line favorite. The Phil Hall-trained son of Creative Cause hasn’t lost in three starts at Hastings, and he is coming off a win over older horses in his first try going around three turns.
The Classic is a wide-open race with the 5-2 morning-line favorite Modern vulnerable at the 1 1/8 miles distance. Neveradoubt is worth considering if he goes off anywhere near his 15-1 morning-line odds.
There is a $25,000 guaranteed pool for the late Pick 4. The Hard Rock Casino for 2-year-old fillies kicks off the sequence in the seventh race. My Aunt Mo looks like the one to beat with two-time Kentucky Derby winning jockey Mario Gutierrez riding.
Snuggles is a single in the Pacific Customs Brokers Distaff in Race 8.
The only scratch on the card is Dear Lilly in the Distaff.
Due to smoke from wildfires in the British Columbia interior it is very hazy in Vancouver. However, the temperature is a comfortable 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
The track is fast.
Jockey Jeff Burningham is off all of his mounts, most significantly Venetian Mask in the Classic. David Lopez picks up the mount on the 3-1 second choice.
