With Richard Hamel aboard, Modern led from start to finish in the $50,000 Pacific Customs Brokers Classic. He paid $6.30 for his narrow win over Neveradoubt in the 1 1/8 miles race. The final margin was a nose, but the margin could have been more. Hamel was concerned about Shooting Jacket, who was riderless after Romario Saunders came off on the second turn, and he took a hold of Modern in the late stretch.

The race was marred when Savado Alegre, who was pressing the pace,with Enrique Gonzalez, aboard broke down on the second turn. Shooting Jacket and Calgary Caper, ridden by Amadeo Perez, couldn't avoid the fallen horse and lost thier riders. All three riders walked off on their own accord.

The final time for the 1 1/8 miles race was 1:51.74.
