Week four of the seven-week Del Mar meet begins Wednesday. Preview …
Race 1 – The main track is slow this summer; front-runners and pace-pressers have dominated and late-runners mostly spun their wheels. “A lot of the fields are strung out; I think (late-runners) get tired of chasing, that’s why they can’t pass the speed,” one trainer said.
Tiki Bar Logic (2) is the speed in the opener, one mile for maiden-40 fillies and mares. Five of the 17 dirt miles were won by the pacesetter; 14 of 17 by a horse positioned 1-2-3 at the quarter pole. Despite the pace advantage, Tiki Bar Logic is not a cinch in her first route. A “must use” in the opener is Grace Hopper (1), whose bad trip (SA, July 2, race 3) is worth viewing.
Race 2 – Another mile on dirt, $16k claiming N3L. Radio Silent (4) is the most probable winner on the card, a first-time gelding from a hot barn entered “not to be claimed.”
Race 3 – One mile is uncharted territory for the 2yo sprinters in this maiden-50; On the Right (1) runs as if two turns will be ideal. His trainer Peter Miller started the meet an uncharacteristic 4-for-53, but he may be busting out. Miller won with 3 of his last 12. An upset candidate is World Wide Blame (5). In his debut, he broke slowly and made a middle move before going flat. He is 12-1.
Race 4 – Love Winning (8) is the filly to beat in this claiming sprint, but recent maiden winner Todos Santos (1) is worth a big look based on her last-out win and subsequent work.
Workout analysts Donald Harris and Toby Turrell chronicled the 1:00.40 work by Todos Santos in the Daily Racing Form Del Mar Clocker Report: “This one is feeling good. Trying and reaching through the lane when going in a faster than given 59.40. RATING: B”
Race 5 – Tina’s Exchange (1), runner-up all four starts, is the one to beat in this turf sprint for older maidens. But first-time starter Zipman (3) is ready to roll. According to Harris and Turrell in the DRF clocker report, Zipman has worked in company with two very good stablemates – Serengeti, expected to be among the favorites Saturday in the Best Pal Stakes for 2yos, and two-time graded sprint winner American Anthem.
