It's hard to say how Pink Lloyd's five-race stakes win steak, which was capped in today's $125K Shepperton, fits in Woodbine's history, but it may never have been matched when you consider that horses like Canadian Triple Crown winners Izvestia, Wando and Dance Smartly all had their local streaks interrupted by a trip to Fort Erie for the Prince of Wales.
Nevertheless, it's a remarkable accomplishment, and it will be interesting to see if trainer Robert Tiller runs "Lloyd" back here Aug. 30 in the $125K Kenora. Tiller also has the promising Circle of Friends nominated to the yearling sales stakes, but that talented runner could opt instead for the Sept. 4 King Corrie, an overnight stakes for sophomores.
A rainstorm midway through the card forced the last three turf races onto the Tapeta. That reduced the 11th-race field to just seven horses, which insured a hefty Jackpot Hi 5 carryover of $780K heading into Sunday.
Eurico Da Silva rode four winners, and Luis Contreras doubled up.
The handle was nearly $5.4 million.
