Dacita lost the New York Stakes at the start, falling much too far behind a slow pace the first six furlongs. She finished about as fast as a horse can finish, but had no chance at those that got a head start. Saturday, in the Grade 1, $600,000 Beverly D. Stakes, Dacita kept up much better with the leaders, and kept alive trainer Chad Brown's Beverly D. winning streak, giving Brown his third win in a row and fourth overall in the race.
The Brown-trained Grand Jete raced in heavy traffic much of the trip and finished well to dead heat with Dona Bruja, who had a nice clean run, for second. The Brown-trained Rainha da Bateria, who wound up much nearer the outside fence than the inner, was fourth.
Dacita, ridden to victory by Irad Ortiz Jr., ran 1 3/16-miles on firm turf in 1:55.49 and paid $15.60. A Chilean-bred mare who is 6 on Northern Hemisphere time, Dacita is by Scat Daddy out of Daja, by Seeker's Reward. Imported from Chile in 2015, Dacita won her second Grade 1 in North America, having captured the 2016 Diana Stakes at Saratoga. A year earlier on that course, Dacita beat the great champion Tepin. When she is on her game and on the right sort of turf course, preferably a firm one, Dacita is formidable indeed. And she was on her game Saturday.
Rain Goddess, the Ireland-based 3-year-old, got into an excellent position just behind the leader and in the pocket, but could do nothing with it. Hawksmoor, who beat Dacita in he New York, raced just off the pace but had no late spark.
