Inty Indy has been knocking on the door of a stakes victory for most of her on-track career, and finally closed the deal with gusto on Saturday night at Hazel Park, devistating the field in the $25,000 Moonbeam Stakes.
The 6-year-old Indy King mare was unhurried out of the gate, while betting favorite High Legend took to her usual spot on the lead from the inside post. First Roar took to the chase on the leader, with Invoice Me tracking closely from three-wide. High Legend carried the group to an opening quarter in 24.34, and entered the first turn with a half-length advantage.
High Legend, First Roar, and Invoice Me came down the stretch for the first time on practically even terms. The latter two passed by High Legend, who settled in to third on the rail next to Pink Pajamas while the leaders set an opening half-mile time of 48.90 seconds.
Invoice Me took command of the lead over First Roar through the second turn, and emerged at the top of the backstretch with aboutt a length's advantage. Meanwhile, jockey Gilberto Santiago began to position Inty Indy for a move several paths wide.
Invoice Me began conceding to First Roar approaching the final turn, and Inty Indy was rapidly swallowing up foes from the outside. In just a few jumps leading up to the turn, Inty Indy improved her position from fourth to first, and continued to cut loose under a vigorous hand ride by Santiago as they turned for the finish.
Santiago went to the left-handed stick on occasion to curtail a bit of weaving by the mare in the stretch, but a less-than-straight path only cut down the margin on what was already a runaway 14 3/4-length score. After conceding the lead earlier in the race, High Legend kept on with a consistent run to finish second, a half-length ahead of late-running Trinity Revealed.
Inty Indy stopped the clock in the one-mile and 70-yard race in 1:50.27 over a fast track. She paid $6.40 to win as the second choice.
Jason Uelmen trains the mare for his fiance, Kala Crampton. Inty Indy was bred in Michigan by Twin Cedars Farm.
The Moonbeam improved Inty Indy's lifetime record to five wins in 23 starts, and increased her earnings to $72,378. It was her first victory in stakes competition in her fourth attempt.
While the Moonbeam served as a prep for the Michigan Sire Stakes, the Moonbeam was Inty Indy's last shot at a stakes win during this year's Hazel Park meet. Her sire, Indy King, stood in Indiana.
