Hazel Park: Fortylinesofdeputy swoops in late for Dowling Stakes upset

Fortylinesofdeputy's fortunes at Hazel Park have been mixed during his sojourns to the Detroit-area track between stops at Thistledown, but he provided arguably the most exciting finish of the evening's four stakes races, with a bold last-to-first run to win the $25,000 Dowling Stakes for older Michigan-bred males.

The 4-year-old gelded son of The Deputy was taken back after the break by jockey Ricardo Barrios to join poorly-breaking favorite Boo Dutton, while Smitteninthemitten and Gun Powder separated from the pack to decide the early leader. Smitteninthemitten took sole possession of the lead heading into the first turn and an opening quarter in 24.02 seconds, but Wayward Baptist surged into contention as they entered the bend.

Wayward Baptist chipped away at longshot Smitteninthemitten's lead on the outside, and the two were on even terms as they crossed the finish line for the first time. Those two continued to battle it out about three lengths ahead of next-closest Boo Dutton, and completed the opening half in 48.12 seconds. Meanwhile, Fortylinesofdeputy remained content to sit in last, 10 3/4 lengths off the leaders.

Boo Dutton swooped into contention from three wide across the backstretch, and disposed of the early leaders past the halfway point of the straightaway. Boo Dutton had multiple lengths on his next-closest competitors and appeared poised to add another stakes win to his resume, but Fortylinesofdeputy was in the budding stages of a monster rally that saw him quickly gaining position as the field headed into the final turn.

Fortylinesofdeputy devoured ground through the bend, and was a fast-gaining second as leader Boo Dutton entered the stretch. They drew even shortly after the eighth pole, and Boo Dutton was only a fleeting challenge against his rival's momentum. Fortylinesofdeputy put away the favorite and drew away under a right-handed whip by Barrios to win by 3 1/2 lengths. Boo Dutton carried on to run second, 12 1/2 lengths ahead of Gun Powder.

The one-mile 70-yard race finished with a time of 1:49.58 over a fast track. Fortylinesofdeputy paid $21.40 to win with the field's third-longest odds.

Fortylinesofdeputy races as a Michigan homebred for Lawrence Belden, and he is trained by Richard Rettele.

The Dowling improved the gelding's record to three wins in nine starts for earnings of $40,993. It was his first stakes victory in his third attempt.

Prior to the Dowling, Fortylinesofdeupty had raced at Hazel Park on three other occasions, finishing out of the money in a pair of stakes races and winning an allowance race on June 17.
