Bird Song, Carina Mia, Lockdown top Tuesday worktab

Bird Song, Carina Mia and Lockdown all put in workouts Tuesday morning over the Oklahoma training track in preparation for upcoming stakes engagements at Saratoga.

Bird Song, equipped with blinkers that he will race in for the first time in the Grade 1 Forego here on Aug. 26, went a half-mile in 48.58 seconds, with a final quarter in 23.97. He galloped out five furlongs in 1:01.83.

Bird Song won the Grade 2 Alysheba at Churchill Downs on May 5 but then finished eighth behind Gun Runner in the Grade 1 Stephen Foster on June 17. After that, trainer Ian Wilkes opted to turn Bird Song back to one-turn races with the goal being the Forego.

Bird Song finished fourth in the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt going six furlongs here on July 29. Dissatisfied with how the colt finished the race, Wilkes has worked him in blinkers the last two weeks.

"I felt I got to try and improve the finish," Wilkes said. "I think he lost focus finishing that's why I'm trying the blinkers."

Lockdown, runner-up to Unchained Melody in the Grade 2 Mother Goose at Belmont Park on July 1, worked four furlongs in 47.98 seconds in preparation for Saturday's Grade 1, $600,000 Alabama Stakes.

Tuesday's move was Lockdown's fifth straight bullet work since that race.

"She went well, she seems sharp, feeling good," trainer Bill Mott said. "It's a half-mile [work]; we got to go a mile and a quarter on Saturday."

Carina Mia and Going for Broke, separated by a neck when finishing 1-2 in the Shine Again Stakes here on Aug. 2, both worked Tuesday.

Carina Mia, working by herself, went a half-mile in 49.03 seconds, with a final quarter of 23.72 seconds. She is nominated to both the Grade 1 Personal Ensign at 1 1-8 miles and the Grade 1 Ballerina at seven furlongs. Both races are on Aug. 26.

Going for Broke went four furlongs in company with A Lot in 49.86 seconds, getting the last three furlongs in 36.53.

Going for Broke, second to Songbird in last year's Grade 1 Alabama here, is likley for the Personal Ensign, a race that will include the two-time champion Songbird.

By the Moon, a five-time stakes winner who most recently was third in the Grade 2 Honorable Miss, worked an easy half-mile in 52.49 seconds. She is expected to run in the Ballerina.
