The $300,000 Zia Park Oaks and the $200,000 Zia Park Derby, both over a mile and a sixteenth, will again top the annual Land of Enchantment program of stakes at Zia Park in Hobbs, N.M. The races will be renewed on Wednesday, Nov. 22. Zia will run a total of nine stakes on the card, with six for Thoroughbreds and three for Quarter Horses. Other top races making up Land of Enchantment Day include the $150,000 Zia Park Championship over a mile and an eighth and the $150,000 Zia Park Quarter Horse Championship.
Zia will open for a 56-date meet on Sept. 9. The season featuring racing for Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses will run through Dec. 12. Zia will race on a Saturday through Tuesday schedule most weeks, with Saturday cards all Quarter Horse races and Monday and Tuesday cards all Thoroughbred races. It will be mixed racing on Sundays.
The annual New Mexico Cup card of divisional statebred stakes is set for Sunday, Oct. 29. The Grade 1, $200,000 Southwest Juvenile Championship for Quarter Horses is set for Dec. 3. Zia has scheduled a number of Thoroughbred stakes on Mondays.
