Collected ($8) upset 3-5 Arrogate in Saturday's $1 million Pacific Classic, the second consecutive defeat for Arrogate who is considered the world's top-rated racehorse.
The first two finishers are trained by Bob Baffert.
Collected led throughot the Grade 1 Pacific Classic at 1 1-4 miles, and held off a late run from Arrogate to win by a half-length. Accelerate, the winner of the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap on July 22, finished third, 4 1-4 lengths behind Collected.
Collected was timed in 2:00.70. Collected set a solid pace of 23.76 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 47.19 for a half-mile.
Collected was challenged by Accelerate on the turn when Arrogate seemed to be struggling in third-place. When jockey Mike Smith guided Arrogate to the outside, the margin to Collected began to diminish. Arrogate closed well in the final sixteenth, but could not catch the winner.
Curlin Road finished fourth, followed by Hard Aces, Royal Albert Hall, and Donworth.
Collected, a 4-year-old colt by City Zip, is unbeaten in four starts this year for Speedway Stable.
Arrogate won the Breeders' Cup Classic last November, the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in January and the Dubai World Cup in March before being given a break through the spring. Arrogate finished a dull fourth in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap.
Owned by Juddmonte Farms, the 4-year-old Arrogate has won 7 of 10 starts and $17,302,600, the highest earnings for a North American-based Thoroughbred.
